In 2023, along with my crochet gang, we decided to come up with a square each for Granny Square Day. As with many of my designs, I start with a few random stitches and they slowly morph into a pattern. With this one, I picked up the scraps of yarn lying next to me started out with a circle and wanted to use puff stitches. The floral centre was then squared off to give the final look. All the while when I was working on this, the kids song about the Little Puffer Train kept going in my head. And there was no way this could not be the name for my square. So although it is not really little, I just felt the name worked. The great part with patterns like this is they work perfectly with any kind of yarn, you can make one or many, join them together to make a larger project.

The original design needed a lot of tugging and blocking to make it lie flat, as you can see in the pictures. I got feedback from a couple of friends who tried the pattern to add a few more stitches at certain points. Anyway the pattern stayed as it was for a while. Earlier this year I designed a bandana using this flower as the central motif. So I reworked the pattern a little to ensure it did not need as much tugging!
